Grace Kelly The Romance™ Doll: An American Princess Meets Her Prince

It sounds like the plot of a Hollywood movie. It has all the elements… glamour, excitement, and romance. It's the story of the first meeting between the American actress Grace Kelly and her future husband, the Prince of Monaco.

The year was 1955, and Miss Kelly was in the French principality to attend the Cannes film festival. The beautiful movie star was invited to a special meeting with the country's handsome — and single — Prince Rainier. Dressing for her rendezvous with royalty, she laid out a lovely gown to be pressed, and prepared to style her just-washed hair.

And then… disaster! French electrical workers, on strike in a labor dispute, cut the power to the hotel, which meant no iron and no hair dryer. With little time to spare, the glamorous actress, known for her natural elegance, searched for the one dress in her luggage that wasn't wrinkled — a flowered frock made from an "easy to sew" pattern. She pulled her hair back under a headband, and set out for the Palace.

We can only speculate what the beauty and the Prince talked about as they strolled through the royal gardens, but just eight months later, Miss Kelly announced her engagement to His Serene Highness The Sovereign Prince of Monaco.
